Guy Gigot was born in Jette,
Brussels, on 30 March 1922, and he escaped from occupied
Belgium on 11 July 1941, but was arrested in Spain where he
was interned in the Prison Camp at Miranda de Ebro. After his
release, in March 1942, he embarked in Lisbon, Portugal for
the UK. Here, on 25 June 1942, he enlisted in the RAFVR, and
started training at he ACRC (20 July 1942), went to 17 ITW -
Scarborough (8 August 1942), followed by 6 EFTS - Sywell
(30 October 1942), 2 ACDC (1 January 1943). Guy Gigot was sent to Canada for further training
at the PDC - Ottawa (18 January 1943), the 31 EFTS - De Winton, Calgary
(22 February 1943) and 34 SFTS,
Medicine Hat (19 April 1943). Qualified as a pilot, and promoted Sergeant, he
returned to the UK at 7 PRC (19 September 1943). Sent to
5(P) AFU on 1 February 1944 and 53 OTU, 23 May 1944, with a posting to 350 (Belgian) Squadron on 27
July 1944. Promoted to F/Sgt on 6 February 1945, Guy Gigot was
commissioned on 24 March 1945. He left the RAFVR, but
stayed with the Belgian Air Force Reserve and joined
SABENA.
