Born on 30 August 1916 at Merbes -
Le - Chateau. Washed off as pilot in 1936. Became Air Gunner -
Observator and was with the 2Aé when Germans invaded Belgium.
Escaped to England were he arrived on 27 June 1940. Flew with 235 Sqn (Coastal
Command) as Air Gunner during the Battle of Britain. Posted to
274 Sqn on 20 November 1940. Accepted for pilot training in
1941: 17 EFTS-Peterborough (19 April 1941), 17 EFTS-North
Luffenham (7 June 1941) and 53 OTU (2 October 1941). Posted in
to 350 Sqn on 19 November 1941. Posted to 1 Receiving Center on 26 November
1942, at the Royal Aircraft Establishement on 8 January 1943,
returning to the 1 Receiving Center on 22 January 1943. Further
postings to: 18 (P)AFU (16 February 1943), N°2 Radio School (26
April 1943), N°10 Radio School (1 June 1943), RAF College / 22
SFTS (4 October 1943), N°3 School of General Reconnaissance (29
November 1943), 5 (C)OTU (19 December 1944). Leopold joined the Civil Aviation after the
War. He was the last living Belgian who
took part in the Battle of
